How to become a commercial actor/actress

I get a lot of requests about how to become a commercial actress and how easy it is or not. I can only speak about my experience and what it’s like to become a commercial actress here in Barcelona, Spain. Personally, I do not find it that difficult to become a commercial actor, but I do hope that you recognize that in pursuit of anything that you want in this life, it comes with patience, perseverance, resilience, and grit.

But first, before you can become a commerical actress/actor, you need to DECIDE to be one. It’s a big decision, I know. So here’s some information I’ve put together to help you decide if this is the journey for you.

So, what exactly is a commercial actor/actress, you ask?

Think of us as the superheroes of short ads. We're the folks you see on your screen promoting everything from the latest gadgets to your favorite snacks. And let me tell you, it's not just about memorizing lines and looking good on camera (although that helps!). It's about tapping into the essence of a product or brand and delivering that message with flair and personality.

How does commercial acting differ from other forms like theater or on-screen roles?

Well, in theater, it's all about the long game – elaborate sets, intricate plots, and characters that evolve over time. On-screen acting, meanwhile, often involves diving deep into a character's psyche, bringing complex emotions to life in front of the camera. There’s also many different types of actors!

So here’s why anyone can become a commercial actor. in commercial acting, you don't need to look a certain way to play a certain part. Seriously, forget about fitting into a specific mold. Brands want diversity, they want uniqueness, they want...well, they want you! Whether you're tall, short, curvy, or lean, there's a role out there with your name on it.

So, here's what you need to become a commercial actress:

  1. Resilience: Get ready to hear a lot of "no's." Rejection is just part of the game in the acting world, especially in commercials where casting decisions can be swift and sometimes unpredictable. I always say: IT’S NEVER PERSONAL!!! But every "no" brings you one step closer to that coveted "yes."

  2. Consistency: Audition after audition, you've got to show up and give it your all. It's not just about talent; it's about putting in the work, honing your craft, and being prepared to seize every opportunity that comes your way. When the auditions are sent your way, you better be ready to play!

  3. Innovation: At auditions, don't be afraid to think outside the box. Take the script and make it your own. Directors and casting agents love to see actors who bring something fresh and unexpected to the table. So, let your creativity shine!

  4. Self-love: In an industry that can sometimes feel superficial, it's essential to have a strong sense of self-worth. Know that you are enough, just as you are. There's a commercial out there with your name on it, and it's perfect for you – flaws and all.

  5. A DAMN GOOD AGENT/AGENCY: Your relationship with your agency matters!! I went through 6 agencies before I found my current agency. Without them, you’re not going on any auditions. Having the right representation can make all the difference. A good agent or agency will not only help you find auditions but also advocate for you, negotiate contracts, and provide invaluable support throughout your career journey. They will also send you on the RIGHT auditions. (A lot of people that I know who already have an agency take my advice to CHANGE agencies because the agency they have aren’t right for them)

Here’s an example of your introduction video as apart of your self-tape audition!

So of you haven’t decided if you want to be a commercial actor/actress, I would make the decision NOW! That’s half the battle. Decide. Don’t wait.
